The a&o Berlin Hauptbahnhof was completely refurbished in March 2019 and has very modernly furnished rooms and business suites. The spacious lobby and entrance area with bar, billiards and table soccer create an inviting atmosphere with international charm. The a&o is in a central yet quiet location.
The a&o Berlin Hauptbahnhof is just 10 minutes by foot from the Berlin Central Station. In spite of its central location the hostel is on a quiet side street. Due to its excellent location, the a&o can be easily reached by car, train or bus, and with its superb connections it is an ideal starting point for excursions into Berlin.
In addition to the modern rooms and business suites, the centrally located a&o Berlin Hauptbahnhof has common rooms and conference rooms for relaxing and working. The unique rooftop terrace bar has a breath-taking panorama view of the metropolis Berlin a highlight of this location. For those arriving by car or bus there are numerous parking spaces available.

No social atmosphere. I booked an 8-bed mixed dorm with my partner. This hostel has over 500 rooms, it was never busy downstairs, yet all 8 beds were filled (7 of which were men). Out of these 7 other men, 4 of them were 50+. In future, hostels need to think about the demographic of who they’re putting people in a room together with. Why not put young people together and a good mix of genders. One of the old men was wanking in the shared toilet, so creepy and disguting!! Chronic snorers too

Overall the hostel was good and would recommend to others for short term stays. Room was spacious and had a decent amount of storage. Weird that 1/2 the beds were bunk beds and other 1/2 were singles. All beds were squeaky. There was some black mold in the shower but besides that, the rooms were clean. There was screaming children running around slamming doors throughout the entire night. Multiple times people had to leave the room and tell them to be quiet. Where were the adults responsible?!

Another reason Berlin is so popular with backpackers is the abundance of cheap youth hostels close to the city centre.The youth hostels in central Berlin are relatively cheap compared to youth hostels in other capital cities in Europe. Many of the city’s sights will give you an insight into the history of Berlin and how it’s helped to shape the city into what it is today. That includes the iconic The Brandenburg Gate, modelled after the Acropolis in Athens, Museum Island where you can find many of the city’s best museums, and the Berlin Wall Memorial, a 1.4km stretch of the Berlin wall that’s been preserved.

Getting around central Berlin is easy with the U-Bahn (subway), while the S-Bahn (light rail) is better for long-distance journeys. You can buy tickets for both from vending machines at the station, which includes a day pass if you’re planning to take more than two trips in one day. There’s also buses and trams, but you’ll need to pay for tickets using cash, which can often mean carrying the exact change.
