A social eco-hostel tucked in Koh Tao’s hillside jungle paradise with a big heart and an even bigger mission? Yes please 💚

We sat down with one of founders of Wonderland Jungle Hostel, Valeri Johnstone, who shared how they built a space where travellers and the local community could connect, learn, and grow together.

Located on a hill but further away from the hustle and bustle of the centre of the island, Wonderland Jungle Hostel has stunning views over the lush jungle. A rooftop bar, air con and daily social activities – you couldn’t have a better base to dive into the natural wonders of Koh Tao.

And wait, it gets even better 🏝

Two humanitarians and a Buddhist open a hostel

Valeri, her husband and a close friend – two humanitarians and a Buddhist – shared a dream about creating a space that functioned both as a hostel and a community centre.

“We had no idea if it would work,” Valeri tells us. “It was during the uncertainty of COVID-19, but we knew we had to try.” So, they took out a loan and poured everything into building Wonderland Jungle Hostel.

❗Spoiler alert: it worked out. Wonderland Jungle Hostel just won the Community Superhero Award in this year’s HOSCARs because beyond being a hostel, they are an education hub and charitable organisation that has equipped over 300 students with essential skills.

A place where education changes lives

Image: Wonderland Jungle Hostel

From day one, Wonderland Jungle Hostel wasn’t just about comfy beds and jungle views. It was designed as a base for education, cultural exchange, and community empowerment.

“We’re equally a hostel and an initiative for positive change,” Valeri says. The hostel’s communal space doubles as a classroom, where volunteers hold free English, computer, and arts classes for local children 💻

One of the most impactful projects is the dedicated dormitory for Indigenous students. Cherry Koe was a child when her family fled Myanmar and she started attending the hostel’s free English classes. Then there’s Vanisa, from Malaysia, who arrived never having seen a laptop before. Both girls come from rural areas where formal education was either extremely limited or non-existent.

Fast forward two years and these two young women are standing in front of a room full of travellers, giving a presentation in flawless English. Cherry Koe spoke about the war in Myanmar and how education became her light in the darkness, while Vanisa shared how she grew up in a village without a school and how meeting Valeri on a humanitarian mission ignited her love for learning.

“It was a deeply emotional moment seeing these two young women, who had started from zero,” Valeri recalls. “Seeing them inspire others reminded me of why we built Wonderland in the first place. We wanted to create a place where even the smallest opportunity can spark a transformation.” 🌟

A ripple effect of kindness

Image: Wonderland Jungle Hostel

The hostel has become a hub of learning where both the local community and travellers benefit from the skills and knowledge shared 🌱

Valeri and her husband Pascal co-founded the Horizon Asia Educational Association (HAEA), a volunteer-driven initiative that now provides life-changing educational opportunities to underserved youth across Thailand, Malaysia, and Myanmar.

It is also the only property in the region that has a fair salary system: all staff from cleaners to general manager get the same salary. “Just because it was the right thing to do,” Valeri says.

Upon learning about the impact, travellers are eager to jump in and help. Some offer to teach classes, others help with the educational association, and many just bring their unique talents and skills to share with everyone 🤹

“We throw out ideas, and people naturally take them on,” Valeri tells. There are several workshops a week, the hostel is full of art and people continue volunteering even after leaving Wonderland, such as a Canadian medical student who’s teaching a local kid dreaming of becoming a doctor.

There’s now a network of 30 volunteers who work on-site or remotely, some teaching in person and others mentoring students virtually.

Located on a remote island, Wonderland Jungle Hostel also takes their environmental footprint seriously 🌄 They use solar-powered lighting outside, collect rainwater and run an organic garden. There’s no single use plastic in sight and guests can trade in plastic bottle caps collected from the island’s beaches for a free drink.

Every corner feels like a story waiting to happen

Image: Wonderland Jungle Hostel

Valeri tells us that growing up, the book Alice in Wonderland became her escape, an imaginary place where creativity and curiosity sparked endless adventures. At Wonderland Jungle Hostel, she wanted to bring that same sense of magic to life 🪄

Every corner is designed to transport guests into a whimsical storybook world, where creativity thrives and the unexpected becomes reality. Just like the book that inspired it, Wonderland Jungle Hostel is a reminder that nothing is impossible.

Valeri’s secret spots in Koh Tao

Jansom Bay

You’ve probably heard about Koh Tao’s world class diving spots, but Valeri’s got some hidden gems up her sleeve…

🚶‍♀️‍➡️ Hike to the abandoned resort at Laem Thien Beach…

Take a scenic trek though the jungle to a secluded bay to find the hauntingly beautiful remains of an abandoned resort. It’s the perfect spot for adventure seekers who love exploring forgotten places and snorkelling in untouched waters.

🛖 …or to the abandoned hut near Sai Thong Beach

This lesser-known hike to the abandoned hut near Sai Thong beach rewards you with breathtaking ocean views and a sense of peaceful isolation. Bring a book, soak in the scenery, and feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret paradise.

🐶Volunteer at the local dog shelter

For those who want to give back while travelling, try volunteering at Koh Koh Pups, a local dog shelter. Walk rescue puppies, play with them, and give them much-needed love.

For many of us, travel is about self-discovery. The most rewarding moments often come when you find yourself crossing paths with and learning from people from all walks of life and different backgrounds.

In our Sustainability Stories series, we show you how hostels go above and beyond for the environment, culture and their communities. Today we’ll share two stories about how Hostelling International USA makes cross-cultural connections easy and accessible for everyone.

HI USA has over 10 hostels across the United States: you can stay at a lighthouse near tide pools and redwood forests close to San Francisco, just a few blocks away from Santa Monica pier in LA, or Central Park in New York City. But they’re far more than wish list-worthy locations – they’re also on a mission to give back to their communities 🧡

Solo adventures for new travellers

HI USA provides scholarships to young Americans with limited resources and little travel experience. Their goal? To give these new adventurers the chance to learn and grow through solo hostel travel.

Each recipient plans their own solo adventure to a city of their choice. “I wanted to go to Chicago to visit this nonprofit organisation that does research and houses different artists doing incredible work for the black and brown communities in Chicago,” says Joely from New York City, who spent time in Chicago last summer.

Watch Joely and other participants share their experiences below ⬇

“I was able to have an immersive experience on my own,” Joely explains. “It was my first time travelling by myself. I was most nervous about exploring a city I knew nothing about on my own. I feel very proud of the way that I navigated having an experience of travelling alone.”

Justin from Maryland used his grant to travel to Los Angeles on the other side of the country. “I gained a sense of self, I gained a sense of community and an overall better perspective of what the world is outside the world I know,” he says. “I got to meet other individuals from other countries that related to me and were able to see me.”

Travelling solo – especially for the first time – can feel a little daunting, but the rewards are SO worth it! If you’re nervous about going solo 1) go anyway – you’ll have a blast and discover what you’re capable of (hint: anything!) 2) make use of the Hostelworld app. With Chats and hostel events, it’s designed to help you meet travellers and make friends 🙌

Download the Hostelworld app

Taking the scenic route to cultural understanding

There are a lot of things we love about travel, and one is them is that it helps break down barriers and strengthen international relationships, especially when times get tough. In the aftermath of 9/11, Hostelling International launched the IOU Respect project advocating for peace by bringing people together from all over the world.

They set up a two-week cultural exchange programme giving young people from the US, Egypt, France, Germany, Lebanon and Tunisia the opportunity to stay in hostels abroad to learn about cultural differences and appreciate how similar we all are 🤝

“This programme changed a lot about how I see the world right now and how I see the people around me,” says Malak from Egypt. She participated in the exchange last year in Germany, visiting Berlin and the beachside town of Warnemünde.

And let’s be real – there’s no better place for cross-cultural exchange than a hostel! They’re the perfect settings for open conversations, challenging misconceptions, and building understanding between people who might never have crossed paths otherwise 👣

See what past participants have to say about the IOU Respect project

“I think of myself as being someone who wants to see equality and equity across races, and I love that this opportunity is giving me the chance to do that with people of my time versus having to study a book,” says Rudy from USA.

The experience goes way beyond group discussions, digging into topical themes such as identity, religion, human rights and active citizenship. The group gets to discover unique cultural differences and learns appreciate the similarities we all undeniably have. Everyone gets to also share their own culture and stories and explore their surroundings with new friends from across the globe.

“It really was amazing. I learned a lot more self-confidence, more social and cultural knowledge and the opportunity to build long-lasting friendships with people from all around the world,” says Sarah from France.

How can you take part?

Feeling inspired? Here’s how to weave cross-cultural experiences into your next trip 🤩

💌 Stay at a hostel that gives back

The easiest way is to stay at hostels that support the local community and culture. See how our 2025 HOSCAR winners do it: from beach cleanups and cultural activities in Brazil all the way to a hostel that doubles as an educational hub in Thailand which has equipped over 300 students with essential skills.

😎 Choose a social hostel

Social hostels are full to the brim with activities, events and shared spaces that bring travellers together. It doesn’t get easier to get to know new people. You can also join the Chat in the Hostelworld app to meet people staying in your hostel and in the same city!

🌞 Wherever you are, keep an open mind

Say hey, plonk yourself down at a table with fellow travellers, share stories, and listen to what others have to say – that’s the start for the travel stories you’ll be telling for years.

Want to live your best – and easiest – travel life? Hostelworld’s Senior Copywriter, Jenny, has been to 48 countries and is a self-proclaimed packing and trip prep pro🧳Here are the things she never travels without…

1⃣ An eSIM

I’ve only recently started using eSIMs, but OMG are they a game-changer! My UK mobile data provider has a pretty generous overseas roaming package, but it doesn’t extend to Morocco and Singapore, both of which I went to recently. Considering how much I use maps (zero sense of direction), the chat function in the Hostelworld app (I know I *have* to fly the Hostelworld flag but I genuinely do use it!) and Instagram (highlight reels = core memories) when I’m out travelling, it was a no-brainer to spend a few pounds on an eSIM. It was beyond useful having access to everything as usual, and I’d highly recommend them 🙌

Get 10% off an Airalo eSIM with code HOSTEL10

2⃣ An *actually* decent maps app

Google Maps has its perks, and most of the time it works pretty well. However, if you tend to walk a lot – whether that’s exploring a city or getting out into nature – definitely download Organic Maps before you go. It’s free, works offline, and knows all the shortcuts! 👣

3⃣ A portable phone charger

We’re all so reliant on our phones these days that running out of battery essentially classifies as an emergency. Do yourself a favour and buy a power bank that has lots of juice – at least 2 charges, more if possible (especially if there are multiple USB ports and more than one of you will be using it, or if you won’t necessarily have access to a plug point every night to charge it) 📱

📢 Good to know: if you’re flying, power banks must be carried in hand luggage due to fire risk. Some airlines impose limits on Wh capacity, so double check before you buy and bring onboard. Some airlines, like Scoot and Singapore Airlines among others, are banning the use of power banks onboard from 1 April 2025 (you can still pack them, you just can’t use them in-flight).

4⃣ Laundry colour catchers

Colour catchers are white sheets that you put in the laundry with your clothes to stop colour bleeding. This is SO handy if you have a mix of whites and colours but don’t want to spend money or time on running two separate loads 🫧

5⃣ Noise-cancelling headphones

And earplugs for dorms obvs, although some hostels provide them for free. But seriously, I could never go back to life before noise-cancelling headphones, especially when I fly. There’s nothing better than drowning out the sound of roaring engines and bawling babies and enjoying a nice quiet journey. Protect your peace! 🎧

6⃣ Compression packing cubes

When you cba to pay for checked baggage? Compression packing cubes. These have extra zips to smoosh everything down, and don’t crumple your clothes like vacuum sealed bags (you’d also need to pack a pump for these to suck all the air out).

7⃣ A neck pillow – with a twist

I highly recommend buying one of these – not just for the comfort aspect if you’ve got a long plane/train/bus journey but because they double up as extra luggage space. Buy one with a zip, remove the foam and stuff it with t-shirts instead 👕 Sure, you’ll have to carry it around with you but for me, it’s worth it (although I live in fear of forgetting it and losing half my wardrobe!).

💡 Bonus hand luggage hack: I’ve found that I can get away with taking a backpack, neck pillow AND a bum bag onto flights, even with budget airlines. Bum bags are easy to hide under a jumper and are great for things like your phone, passport, boarding passes etc👍

8⃣ A microfibre towel

Free hostel towels are always the goal, but if not, microfibre towels are where it’s at. They’re lightweight, compact, quick-drying, and easy to shake sand off. PLUS, they double up as a curtain if your bunk doesn’t have one!

9⃣ Zip-lock wet bags

If you’re going somewhere beachy or on any kind of water-based adventure, waterproof bags for your swimmers are all kinds of useful to stop the contents of your suitcase or backpack getting damp. Next time you order a swimwear haul from Shein, don’t throw the bags away – keep them on standby for your next trip 👙

With a staggering 175 museums, Berlin is a treasure trove for cultured travellers. Whilst cranes clutter the skyline and the city changes almost beyond recognition, it’s still steeped in a monumental history, with a love of the archaic and aesthetic. It’s a city that’s not afraid to look to its own past to shed light on its future.

Covering everything from computer games to the darkly absurd Stasi surveillance methods, there truly is a Berlin museum for everyone. If you’re used to the free museums in London, the entry fees can seem a little steep. But with a bit of planning you can still get your culture fix on a backpacker’s budget, especially if you book a stay in one of Berlin’s best hostels. There are several free museums in Berlin, plus if you plan to visit more than one address on this list, then a Berlin museum pass can save you loads of money. Try the 24-hour Berlin Museum Island Pass (which gives you access to the 5 of the best museums in Berlin for €18, instead of €10-12 each) or the Welcome Card (which gives you free and reduced entry to loads of museums and other attractions, plus unlimited public transport – from €19.90).

So which Berlin museums should you make a beeline for? Here’s our pick of the best.

Built in the 19th century by one of Berlin’s most famous and prolific architects, Friedrich August Stüler, the New Museum (“Neues Museum”) was all but destroyed during WW2. It remained a bombed out ruin for years under GDR rule, before being restored and reopened by British architect David Chipperfield in 1999. The new building, made from recycled bricks and retaining some original elements, is an exquisite mix of old and new, or in Chipperfield’s words: “The contemporary reflects the lost, but without imitating it.”

Inside the stunning building you’ll find a vast collection of Egyptian art and classical antiquities, plus one of the city’s most famous artefacts: the bust of Nefertiti. Created in 1345 B.C, it’s one of the most copied pieces of Egyptian art ever and truly is a thing of beauty.

📍 Address: Bodestraße 1-3, 10178 Berlin
💶 Price: €12
✨ Why Visit: Home to the legendary bust of Nefertiti, and incredible Egyptian and prehistoric collections.

If you really want to understand the Berlin Wall, skip the crowds at the East Side Gallery and Checkpoint Charlie and head to this moving and totally free museum just north of the centre. The museum explains how and why the wall came about, with footage of its construction. A viewing platform allows you to see a section of the wall as it was, complete with death strip and watchtowers, whilst plaques at ground level mark the many escape tunnels dug by desperate East Germans, with information about how many people died or escaped there.

This is one of the most moving museums in Berlin, and really helps those who didn’t experience the horror first hand understand the impact of the Berlin Wall on ordinary people’s lives.

Located in the former Stasi HQ, this museum is a must for fans of the Oscar-winning classic The Lives Of Others, which was shot here. Walking around the huge, austere offices and boardrooms, you’ll get a chilling insight into life in East Berlin under Socialist rule. Keep an eye out for the primitive covert surveillance devices, featuring cameras clumsily hidden in watering cans, ties and behind buttons. What makes a visit to this Berlin museum so memorable, besides the aesthetics, is the unsettling mix of eeriness and absurdity.

Opened in 2001, in an old baroque building re-imagined by world-famous architect Daniel Libeskind, this is a hugely important and popular Berlin museum. The permanent exhibition focuses on Jewish life in Germany through history, with artworks, texts, and plenty of interactive elements.  For a few Euros you can even purchase a piece of art by a talented Berlin-based Jewish artist from a vending machine. Of course, the museum also explores the devastating period for Jews in Berlin leading up to and during WW2. Viewed alongside the other exhibits, the all-too-familiar facts of the holocaust are somehow all the more disturbing.

Despite the potentially dour subject matter, the DDR Museum paints a fascinating and surprisingly fun and colourful illustration of life in East Berlin before the wall came down. This is partly thanks to its interactive nature:  ‘Everything is waiting to be touched or felt’ here. You can have a poke around the reconstruction of an East German apartment, gaudy wallpaper and all; find out what it was like to sit in an interrogation room; listen to examples of East German pop music; and even explore the cheeky exhibition detailing the Communist fascination with nudity. The museum is noisy, lively, and altogether quite unexpected. Don’t forget to try a bottle of East German-style lemony cola (named “Vita Cola”) at the cafe afterwards. Very refreshing indeed.

Berlin’s role in the history of cinema cannot be understated: the film-making capital of Germany, the city pioneered the horror film (with iconic films such as Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari), science fiction (with Metropolis), and was a massive influence on American cinema, with the Hollywood melodrama and crime genres of the 1950s having their genesis in German film. This rich history can be explored at the Kinemathek on Potsdamerplatz, a very modern film museum that delves back into the origin of the artform, and begins with a marvellously immersive walk through a futuristic hall of mirrors.

A fascinating and at times frightening museum, this former Stasi prison is a little way out of the city, and not much publicised, but well worth the visit. Machine gun towers, barbed wire, cells without windows, water torture facilities… this is not a place for the faint-hearted. But, combined with a visit to the Stasimuseum, it paints a necessary and grim picture of a notorious era in Berlin’s history. The guided tours are often led by former inmates of the prison, and are well worth doing.

📍 Address: Genslerstraße 66, 13055 Berlin
💶 Price: Free (guided tours recommended, donations welcomed)
✨ Why Visit: Experience a chilling yet essential insight into East Germany’s notorious Stasi prison, guided by former inmates for authentic personal accounts.

These days, travellers are beginning to see that this red-roofed city is worth more than just a quick visit. Have a seat in Bana Jelačića (Zagreb’s main square) and watch people stroll across cobblestones bordered with church spires and vibrant concrete murals. Zagreb is the queen of café culture, but after you’ve finished your latte? Bathe in the warm glow of Zagreb’s buzzing street life: pop-up bars, markets and food stalls await your jingling pockets.

A mosaic of balconies, blocks and bars litter the cobbled streets in a clash of shapes. In the evenings, street performers serenade you outside bustling eateries as you sip on red wine and scoff down spanakopita.

💎Hidden Gems – Off the beaten track – the best small cities in Europe for Interrailing

Alnwick, Zwolle and Hossegor – They don’t conjure up quite the same excitement as London, Amsterdam and Paris, do they? But when planning your I route, you should consider throwing a few of the best small cities and towns in Europe into the mix. Yes, Interrail not only covers the big-hitters, you can travel practically anywhere on the rail network with your golden ticket. Not only can small towns be more budget-friendly than the big capitals, they are also less crowded and you’ll have the thrill of discovering a more offbeat side of Europe.

For this section, we’ve focused on the best smalls cities in Western Europe – in our experience, this is where getting an  makes the most sense, particularly if you’re hoping to be spontaneous and see a few places in a relatively short space of time. Anybody who’s tried to buy a ticket from London to Edinburgh on the day of travel will know what we’re talking about! For clarity, Eurail Passes are only for non-European citizens or residents while InterRail Passes are only for European citizens or residents.

So, here’s our pick of the best European cities to visit for an off-the-beaten-track adventure, featuring quirky bookshops, underground trampolining and a poison garden.

1. San Sebastian – Spain

This gorgeous coastal city in the north of Spain, not far from the French border, was a revelation when we visited earlier this year. If you’re looking for daily foodgasms, amazing surf and stunning coastal hiking ops then you need to add San Sebastian to your Interrail itinerary ASAP.

Where to stay: A Room In The City Hostel is quite possibly one of our favourite hostels in Europe and features a mahoossive roof terrace, ridiculously friendly staff and cosy pod beds for a good night’s sleep. Not for you? View all hostels in San Sebastian.

2. Zwolle – Netherlands

Zwolle best small cities in europe for alternative interrailing route (c) Hans Westerink
@Hans Westerink

Located in the North of the Netherlands, Zwolle is a historic little city that’s home to one of Europe’s most impressive bookshops. The Waanders in de Broeren occupies three floors of a magnificent gothic cathedral, complete with an original 15th-century organ and stunning stained-glass windows. There are plenty of comfy seats dotted around plus a café, so if you’re looking for somewhere inspiring to catch up on your reading/studies, then look no further.

Where to stay: Zwolle isn’t the easiest place to get to, but you can make the trip for the day from a few bigger places in the Netherlands, including Amsterdam and Utrecht. View all hostels in the Netherlands.

Folkestone – England

Folkestone best small cities in Europe alternative interrailing route (c) Emma Martell
@Emma Martell / Loz Pycock

A revival of Britain’s forgotten coastal resorts has been happening recently, with towns such as Margate leading the charge. Folkestone is still a little rough around the edges, but with its own creative quarter, picturesque coastal walks and just 50 minutes by train from London, it looks set to be the next Brighton.

For the best fish and chips, head to The Smokehouse, the budget outpost of Michelin-starred Rocksalt restaurant. For great coffee try the Steep Street literary café. And for everything from zine workshops to vintage trinkets, take a walk around the creative quarter down by the harbour. If you’re lucky enough to be in town for the next Trienniale (Sep-Nov 2017), you’ll be treated to amazing contemporary art in unusual locations all around town.

Where to stay: Located just 50 minutes by train from King’s Cross Station, you can easily visit Folkestone for the day from the capital. Check out all our amazing hostels in London.

3. Blaenau Ffestiniog – Wales

Surrounded by the stunning Snowdonia National Park, this tiny former mining town is a must for thrill seekers exploring Europe. The nearby Llechwedd Slate Caverns are home to not one but two unusual attractions: above ground, you’ll find the largest zip line network in the world, Titan, and below ground a psychedelic trampoline-filled wonderland, Bounce Below. Just don’t ask us how to pronounce Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Where to stay: Take a day trip from nearby Carnaerfon, where you’ll find the c Not for you? View all hostels in Wales.

4. Hossegor – France

Hossegor best small European cities (c) Flickr
@Viktoriia Vidal VB

This tiny French town first came onto our radar when our friends Sunset Sons set up home there. It’s just along the coast and over the border from San Sebastian, and it’s supposedly one of the best places to surf in Europe, if not the world. The fact that it’s such a small place means there’s a lovely community vibe, and you’ll get chatting to other surfers from all over the globe in between catching waves. Gnarly.

Where to stay: Le Surf Spot is a surfer’s dream hostel, found less than 50 metres from the beach and offering free surfboard hire. Not for you? View all hostels in France.

5. Freiburg – Germany

Freiburg best small European cities alternative interrailing route (c) Lovely for Living
@Lovelyforliving

Pretty much every list of the best small cities in Europe includes Freiburg, so it’s no insider tip. But with stunning natural beauty, great coffee and beer, and a studenty vibe that oozes cool, we just had to include it. Climb the Schlossberg hill for amazing views of the city, soak up all the history in the Freiburg Münster and strike a pose on the Blaue Brücke. Do like the locals, and follow one of the pretty hiking trails out of the city and straight into the Black Forest, or if you’re feeling lazy take the cable car over the forest and up to the Schauisland mountain.

After a full day exploring, relax in the beer garden of local brewery Hausbrauerei Feierling or head to the recently opened Vida for amazing vegan and veggie food.

Where to stay: Try Kultur|Jugendherberge Rottweil located in a former convent in nearby Rottweil, or view more hostels in Germany.

6. Alnwick – England

alnwick best small cities to visit in Europe for alternative interrail route (c) flickr

@milo bostock, Martin Burns, Jo Jakeman, madraban

Poison garden. Giant treehouse. A bookshop housed in an old railway station. Alnwick is one of the coolest little places we’ve visited in England, and it’s hard to believe that even many Brits haven’t heard of it. The bookshop in question is Barter Books, and aside from being the best second-hand bookshop in England, it’s also where the original “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster was discovered in a dusty old box. So now you know who to blame. The poster now hangs on the wall above the till.

The poison garden and giant treehouse are both housed in the nearby Alnwick Garden, and if you have time then Alnwick Castle is also worth a look. When you’re done exploring, head over to the wonderfully named Grannies Tearoom for delicious scones and a proper British brew.

Where to stay: Alnwick Youth Hostel, housed in the town’s former courthouse, or if you’d prefer to stay somewhere a bit livelier, check out our hostels in Newcastle, which is 25 minutes by train and a short bus ride into the centre of Alnwick.

7. Matera – Italy

Matera Italy best small cities in europe for alternative interrail itinerary (c) Robbie Shade / mary93mod

Robbie Shade / mary93mod

Given the popularity of places such as Cappadocia and Santorini, it’s surprising that this quirky little town in Southern Italy home to thousands of ancient cave dwellings isn’t better known. The historic centre, known as the “Sassi” (lol) was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in the 90s, and the caves are now home to characterful restaurants, cafes and galleries. Make sure you explore the tiny cave churches scattered around, where you’ll find some of the oldest frescoes in Europe.

Where to stay: Check out the quirky Rock Hostel in Matera’s Old Town, or view more hostels in Matera.

8. Roubaix – France

Roubaix la piscine museum best small cities to visit in Europe on interrailing trip

@ Alain Leprince/La Piscine, musée d’art et d’industrie de Roubaix 2016

Roubaix’s museum of art and industry aka “La Piscine” is guaranteed to make your Instagram feed more fabulous. Its impressive collection of sculptures, paintings and ceramics is housed in a former swimming pool, where the exhibits and gorgeous Art Deco design of the building are reflected in the water of the now-disused pool. Other original features such as the old changing cubicles have been preserved, making this one of the quirkiest museums we’ve ever visited.

The museum alone is worth making the trip to Roubaix, but the city also boasts some pretty cool architecture from its glory days as an industrial hub. Take a walk around and keep your eyes peeled for buildings such as the Church Saint-Martin, Huchon Water Tower, and the National Archives of the Working World.

Where to stay: Roubaix is just 10km from Lille, where you can stay at the cosy Hostel Gastama, who do a mean vegan curry. Not for you? View all hostels in France.

5 of the best Interrailing routes

Okay, so you’re heading out to Europe. But what Interrailing route should you take? There are so many great spots in Europe, it can be a minefield deciding where to go. Not to worry! We’ve pulled together some of the most popular routes for all your train travel needs. Whether going Interrailing for 1 week or 1 month, you’re bound to have a brilliant time.

Bear in mind, most of the stops we’ve included here are cities. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-track adventure, see the section above!

🏛 1. Agatha Christie’s Route – London to Istanbul

After a few cups of tea (or a few pints), you’ll be ready to set off on your Interrailing route from London. Our chosen itinerary follows the iconic train journey of the Orient Express itself: London to Istanbul via Paris. Before the take-off of private jets and first-class flights, the world’s elite travelled across Europe in the velvet seats of extravagant trains. While today’s Interrailing route is tediously modern – what do you mean there isn’t a mahogany dining car with crystal goblets?! – the grandeur of this itinerary is not to be skipped over. And don’t worry, Agatha Christie won’t pop in to enlist you to solve a murder.

🌿 2. Short and Sweet: Best Interrailing 1-Week Route  – Switzerland

A 1-week Interrailing pass is perfect for getting to grips with a European country of your choice. Our recommendation? Take a once in a lifetime journey through the rolling hills and jagged mountains of the Swiss countryside. Switzerland deserves to rise above its famed chocolate shops and cuckoo clocks (although both are undoubtedly excellent.) Lovers of folk-core can stroll through Bern’s cobbled alleyways and peer precariously into the cyan Aare River from medieval stone arc bridges. Thrill seekers head to rocky heights for year-round alpine adventure. Summer brings white-water-rafting and rambling hikes with storybook views; Winter hears skis slice through powder-sprinkled glaciers while roaring fires await under mounted deer heads at the bottom of the mountain.

📍 Zurich → Lucerne → Interlaken → Bern → Geneva
🕒 Best time to go: Spring or Summer for scenic train travel.

💰 Estimated Cost:

  • Interrail Switzerland Pass: ~€250 (4-day pass)

🎭 3. Happy medium: Best 2-Week Route – North to South Europe

In two weeks, you can cover A LOT of countries. For a top-to-bottom tour of some of Europe’s most beautiful cities, we suggest this North to South Interrailing itinerary. Whizz through the natural wonders of Sweden, Germany, Austria and Italy, and watch the scenery shift from Nordic to the Mediterranean before your very eyes. Stroll through Stockholm’s storybook city centre; head into the belly of Berlin for a night to remember; parade the imperial streets of Vienna; then finish up in a family-run bistro overlooking the Colosseum pleading with the waiter: ‘una pizza grande per favore’.

🌊 Surf Hostel FAQs – Everything You Need to Know 🏄‍♂️

Not necessarily! Most surf hostels offer board rentals or include them in surf lesson packages. If you’re a beginner, it’s better to rent until you know your preferences. However, if you’re a pro and have a favorite board, you might prefer bringing your own (check airline fees before traveling!). 🏄‍♂️🛫

It depends on the destination! 🌎 Here’s a quick guide:

  • Europe (Portugal, Spain, UK): September – April
  • Central America (Costa Rica, Nicaragua): May – November
  • Indonesia & Bali: April – October
  • Australia & Hawaii: Year-round, but biggest swells from March – October

Absolutely! Many surf hostels cater to all skill levels, offering beginner-friendly surf camps, lessons, and smaller waves nearby. Look for hostels that offer surf instructors or soft-top board rentals to help you learn in a safe, fun environment. 🌞🏄

Prices vary by location, but dorm beds typically range from £8 – £25 per night, while private rooms cost between £25 – £70 per night. Some hostels offer surf packages that include accommodation, lessons, and gear rentals at discounted rates. 💰🌊

Along with your swimsuit and good vibes, don’t forget:
✅ A quick-dry towel
✅ Reef-safe sunscreen
✅ Flip-flops
✅ Rash guard (for sun & board protection)
✅ Waterproof phone case
✅ A dry bag for wet clothes

Not at all! Even if you don’t surf, you’ll love the beachfront locations, social atmosphere, yoga sessions, and adventure activities like snorkeling, hiking, and boat tours. Many surf hostels welcome digital nomads, backpackers, and anyone looking for good vibes by the sea. 🌍🌴

If you need fast WiFi and chill workspaces, these hostels are perfect:
🏄‍♂️ Farm Hostel, Bali – Great coworking spaces + tropical vibes
🏄‍♂️ 99 Surf Lodge, Nicaragua – Beachfront work-friendly hostel with infinity pool
🏄‍♂️ Villa Blue Boutique Hostel, Portugal – Private workspaces & ocean views

Yes! A one-week surf camp can teach you the basics, including paddling, popping up, and catching small waves. However, mastering the sport takes time and practice! If you’re a beginner, choose a hostel near gentle, sandy-bottomed breaks to make learning easier. 🏄‍♀️💙

Easy! Click below to browse and book the best surf hostels around the world. Spots fill up fast, especially in high season, so secure your stay early! 🌊🏄‍♂️

📌 Best Backpacking Destinations for 2025

20. Dakar – Senegal 🇸🇳

The sunset in Baobab Grove Close Dakar Senegal West Africa

Dakar, the lively capital of Senegal, is quickly becoming one of West Africa’s top backpacking destinations. With its vibrant music scene, rich history, and stunning coastal landscapes, it’s a perfect blend of adventure and culture. Explore the colorful markets of Sandaga, learn about Senegal’s past at Gorée Island, and dance to live mbalax music in the buzzing Medina district.

For nature lovers, Lac Rose (Pink Lake) offers a surreal pink-hued water experience, while Ngor Island is a hidden surf paradise. Dakar is also one of Africa’s best foodie cities, with affordable, delicious street food like thieboudienne (Senegalese jollof rice) and yassa chicken.

19. Sendai – Japan 🇯🇵

✨ For hidden gems & lively festivals

best backpacking destinations - Sendai

📸 @rogériotoledo

Travellers will head to Japan in 2020 for the Tokyo Olympics, but if you’re not one to follow the crowds then Sendai is a great alternative. It’s made the list as one of next year’s best backpacking destinations. The best time to explore this modern city is in August, when the streets come alive for Tanabata Matsuri on the 6th-8th. This lively festival is held on the days when the stars Altair and Vega cross paths, and features live music, traditional dance, street food, fireworks, and most famously, thousands of colourful streamers decorating the city. If you can’t manage to time your visit to coincide with this, Sendai is still well worth a visit. It’s got bustling markets, wonderfully random nightlife options and a long list of impressive temples and shrines to check out.

Combining two of our favourite things, Orit Hostel & Café Bar Lounge has an on-site coffee shop with a welcoming atmosphere. It’s perfect for solo travellers on the hunt for new travel buddies, or digital nomads needing a quiet space to chill with their laptops. The facilities are super modern, and there’s a terrace to enjoy your morning coffee overlooking the city.

🛏 Top Hostel: Orit Hostel & Café Bar Lounge – Sleek design, social café, and great for solo travelers.

💰 Backpacker Budget: $40-$70 per day
✔ Best time to visit: August (for the festival) or April (for cherry blossoms)

💬 “Sendai’s night markets and shrines were such a cool surprise!” – Mei, South Korea

18. Portland (Maine) – USA 🇺🇸

✨ For craft beer & quirky coastal vibes

best backpacking destinations - Portland

📸: @hil.will

Trendy Portland Oregon has been on the traveller radar for ages, but we bet you haven’t added this small, East Coast city to your USA wishlist yet! Sure, the likes of NYC and LA are always gonna have us hooked, but can you really say you’ve experienced the US until you’ve ventured away from the big cities? Travellers to Portland are rewarded with a local, community feel and zero crowds. The Old Port’s cobbled streets and colourful mismatch of boutique shops and restaurants are a quirky surprise, and you might not expect the city to have such a vibrant arts scene that includes the oldest public art museum in the US. Throw in a famed farmers’ market and local craft breweries, and it’s hard to believe that more people aren’t shouting about Portland’s cool credentials!

Wondering where to stay? Look no further than the outrageously funky Black Elephant Hostel. Much like the city itself, it’s equal parts cosy and cool, with a warm, family feel and colourfully mismatched interiors. It’s right next to the Old Port so exploring couldn’t be easier, and when you’re done you can snuggle up in front of the fireplace in the communal lounge.

💰 Backpacker Budget: $45-$70 per day
✔ Best time to visit: June – October (for the best weather & seafood season)

💬 “Maine’s seafood is out of this world – I could eat lobster rolls every day!” – Daniel, Canada

17. Raglan – New Zealand 🇳🇿

✨ For epic surf & stunning black sand beaches

best backpacking destinations - Raglan Nouvelle-Zélande @otsu_91

📸: @otsu_91

The North Island town of Raglan is surrounded by incredible natural beauty and epic surf breaks. It’s best known for its unusual black sand coastline, but venture a little outside of town and discover peaceful walking trails through the Wainui nature reserve, cycling routes over an ancient volcano and the glistening green waters of the Bridal Veil Falls. Most backpackers come here to surf though, as there’s a spot for every ability. Ngarunui Beach is the place for those who’ve never picked up a board, as the waves are calm and there are several surf schools to choose from. If this isn’t your first rodeo, Manu Bay and Whale Bay offer some of the best waves in the world, set against breathtaking scenery.

To best enjoy all that Mother Nature has on offer in Raglan, base yourself at the eco-friendly Raglan Backpackers. You can hang out in a hammock or the hot tub in the garden, take part in an outdoor yoga class or venture out with a kayak or surfboard, both of which are available to rent from the hostel. With a killer location right on the water, you can wake up in your bunk to the sounds of waves crashing.

🛏 Top Hostel: Raglan Backpackers – Beachside hammocks, hot tub, and kayak rentals.

💰 Backpacker Budget: $40-$60 per day
✔ Best time to visit: December – April (best surf season)

💬 “Surfing at Manu Bay was the best wave of my life!” – Tom, Australia

16. Pisac – Peru 🇵🇪

✨ For spiritual vibes & Andean adventures

best backpacking destinations - Pisac

📸: @willianjusten

For a rural alternative to the nearby city of Cusco, many travellers to Peru are choosing to explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas by basing themselves in Pisac, a small village with a strong sense of spirituality. This is thanks to the unreal landscapes and mysterious history of the surrounding valley, the bohemian vibe and slow pace of life in the Old Town, and the range of wellness activities practiced here. It doesn’t get much more relaxing than yoga with these views, and you’re likely to feel like you’re floating on clouds after a few days in Pisac! Aside from achieving total zen, other things to do in Pisac include browsing for local crafts at the Sunday market, wandering the colonial streets of the Old Town and climbing the crowd-free Pisac ruins.

Wolf Totem Guesthouse embodies the spirit of Pisac. This beautifully boho hostel has eco-friendly features, a bright communal space overlooking the valley and outdoor hammocks with some of the best views in South America. There’s an on-site café, outdoor yoga space and even a sauna to relax in after a day’s trekking.

Top Things to Do in Pisac:

✅ Visit the Pisac Ruins, a lesser-known but stunning Inca site.
✅ Browse the Pisac Sunday Market for handmade textiles and crafts.
✅ Try a sound healing session or meditation retreat.

🛏 Top Hostel: Wolf Totem Guesthouse – Eco-friendly, amazing views, and a sauna for post-hike relaxation.

💬 “Watching the sunrise over the Sacred Valley from my hammock was a spiritual moment.” – Julia, Germany

15. Trapani – Italy 🇮🇹

✨ For Sicilian charm & stunning coastlines

best backpacking destinations - Trapani

 📸: @racheleminunno

If you’re travelling to Italy in 2020, don’t skip over sun-kissed Sicily. The gorgeous Mediterranean island is home to sparkling beaches, smoking volcanoes and attractive cities like Trapani, one of next year’s best backpacking destinations. Take a stroll through the narrow streets of the Old Town and check out its churches and basilicas, before feasting on hearty Sicilian classics like arancini and cannoli. For the best vistas around, visit the clifftop medieval village of Erice. At 750m above sea level, you’ll get unbeatable views of Trapani’s sand-hued architecture and the surrounding Med. Trapani is also a perfect spot to base yourself for day trips around Sicily. The stunning Aegadian Islands are only 30 minutes away by boat, so you can spend a day of pure bliss exploring coves and snorkelling around white sand beaches.

For a budget-friendly stay in the city centre, Hostelleria is the top choice. It’s got a minimalistic design but has everything you’ll need, with dorms and private rooms, a shared kitchen and a lively bar next door.

🛏 Top Hostel: Hostelleria – Modern design, lively bar, and walking distance to everything.

💰 Backpacker Budget: $40-$60 per day
✔ Best time to visit: May – October (best beach weather)

💬 “Sicily is an absolute must – Trapani was my favourite stop!” – Giulia, Italy

14. Liège – Belgium 🇧🇪

✨ For underrated European charm

best backpacking destinations - Liège

📸: @ahmedashoour

It may have shied away from the spotlight in the past, but Belgium’s fourth largest city is barging the likes of Bruges and Brussels out of the way to get the backpacker appreciation it deserves. Despite being packed full of incredible architecture, cultural gems and amazing food, it manages to keep hold of a laid-back, small town vibe that makes you feel instantly at home. Grab a Liège waffle (which are famous for the exploding sugar grains inside!) and take a picturesque walk along the Meuse River, before exploring the medieval buildings of the main square. The best spot for a local tipple is Place du Marché, an assortment of traditional bars and pubs that come alive in the evening.

For a lively place to stay in Liège you can’t beat Liège Youth Hostel. Not only is it stylish and chic, it’s full of amazing social spaces, like an on-site bar with pool tables and foosball, outdoor space with ping pong tables and a colourful café to enjoy your free breakfast. It couldn’t be easier to meet new friends here – plus it’s just 5 minutes from Liège’s best nightlife when you’re ready to hit the town with them!

🛏 Top Hostel: Liège Youth Hostel – Chic design, social atmosphere, and 5 minutes from nightlife.

💬 “Liège is like Brussels’ cool, laid-back cousin.” – Antoine, France

13. Buenaventura – Colombia 🇨🇴

✨ For jungle hikes & hidden beaches

Colombia has transformed the world’s perception of it in recent years, nowhere less so than Buenaventura. Only a few years ago this Pacific Coast city was regarded as the most dangerous in the country, but now it’s an increasingly popular spot that’s set to be one of the best backpacking destinations of 2020. Though Buenaventura is packed full of lively salsa bars, Afro-Colombian seafood restaurants and waterfront entertainment, the city itself isn’t actually the main attraction – we’re most interested in the unspoilt beaches, tropical jungle and natural pools that surround it! Compared to the rest of the country, this area is still relatively under the radar, so you can enjoy surfing and beachfront cocktails minus the crowds of Colombia’s more famous destinations. Don’t miss a night-time cave swim with fluorescent plankton – an experience you’ll never forget.

For the ultimate peaceful stay, choose Pacifico Hostel. It’s surrounded by virgin jungle and has its own private beach(!!), overlooked by a funky open-air bar. They choose sustainable options like growing their own veg and running their bathrooms with rain water, and they’ll lend you a kayak to explore the nearby mangroves. We’re starting to think city life is overrated…

🛏 Top Hostel: Pacifico Hostel – Private beach, jungle surroundings, and epic sunsets.

💰 Backpacker Budget: $20-$40 per day
✔ Best time to visit: June – September (dry season)

💬 “Swimming with glowing plankton was like something out of a dream.” – María, Spain

12. Hà Giang – Vietnam 🇻🇳

✨ For epic motorbike adventures

📸@ourtasteforlife

Hà Giang is Vietnam’s most northern province, which despite being one of the most jaw-droppingly stunning areas of the country, is often overlooked by backpackers as it’s far away from the usual hotspots. This means no one spoiling your scenery shots – bonus! It’s easily (and cheaply) reached via overnight bus, and travellers who make the long journey will reap the rewards. Start your adventure in the provincial capital of the same name, and make like the other intrepid backpackers who rent a motorbike and journey through the region’s picturesque winding roads. You’ll encounter rural communities, small towns and ancient traditions, all set against the rolling green mountains that make Hà Giang so unforgettable.

NoMadders Hostel is the perfect base on the outskirts of the city to soak in that fresh, mountain air. Their gorgeous dorms cost as little as £4 a night, and you can treat yourself to a private hut from £20. There’s an outdoor pool and patio surrounded by jungle, a bar and a hot tub for living your best backpacker life!

🛏 Top Hostel: NoMadders Hostel – Outdoor pool, jungle views, and super cheap dorms.

💬 “The Hà Giang Loop is the best thing I’ve ever done.” – Max, Germany

11. Maputo – Mozambique 🇲🇿

✨ For vibrant streets & fresh seafood

best backpacking destinations - Maputo

📸: @eligetumiaventura

Mozambique’s charming capital city has seen a recent resurgence, with travellers enjoying the pastel-hued streets of Downtown and their cute cafes, colonial architecture and fascinating museums and galleries. It’s best explored on foot, and even better with an expert guide, so taking a walking tour is the best way to learn about Maputo’s tumultuous history and to discover insider secrets. For a local feast, head to the fish market, where you can pick your catch and have it cooked with chips or rice at one of the surrounding restaurants! And when city life all gets a bit too much, you can hop on a bus for 90 minutes to reach the quiet white sand beaches of Ponto do Ouro.

Maputo is only just emerging as a backpacker destination so there aren’t heaps of hostels, which means you should take full advantage of The Base. A small hostel with a homely feel, you can cook up a feast on the BBQ and enjoy it on the terrace overlooking Maputo Bay! It’s within walking distance of the city’s best attractions, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants.

💰 Backpacker Budget: $25-$45 per day
✔ Best time to visit: May – October (dry season)

💬 “The seafood in Maputo is hands down the best I’ve had.” – Andre, Portugal

10. Nassau – Bahamas 🇧🇸

✨ For Caribbean vibes on a backpacker budget

best backpacking destinations - Nassau

📸: @rosefernndez

You might not think of budget travellers when you picture the Bahamas, but then again you probably don’t think of cities either. Well that’s all about to change, because the Bahamas’ capital (and only) city is one of the best backpacking destinations for 2020 – especially if you’re the type of traveller who swerves the resorts and seeks out authentic experiences (i.e. all of us!) The city oozes Caribbean culture, nowhere more so than in the vibrant ‘Fish Fry’ neighbourhood, where colourful jerk joints, bars and street food vendors line the streets, the energy is electric and the soundtrack is provided by DJs and reggae bands. Other highlights include sipping rum at a local distillery, diving with sharks at Stuart’s Cove and shopping for crafts at the Straw Market. It’s better in the Bahamas!

Hostels in the Bahamas – say what?! BahaSea Backpackers gives you paradise on a budget, with two pools overlooking the sparkling turquoise ocean. ✨ For cider, surf & stunning coastal viewsbest backpacking destinations - Gijon

📸:@ellie_etlalune

Once a sleepy fishing port, the city of Gijón in Spain’s northern Asturias region is turning into a hotspot for surfing, eating and partying. Solo travellers will feel right at home here, as the atmosphere is always buzzing and social, thanks to al fresco drinking and dining in the Centro district (and of course, the hostels). Asturias is famous for its cider, and there are plenty of bars in the city where you can watch your order being poured from a great height – the traditional way to serve it! But before you have too much of that, you need to hit the soft golden sand of Playa de San Lorenzo for some beach yoga and surfing. Trust us, you won’t be able to resist the easy-going vibe!

If you want to make the most of the waves, Gijón Surf Hostel will help you out with cheap board rental, lessons and a convenient location close to the beach. Another surfer’s paradise, Siargao is the wave-riding capital of The Philippines that’s low-key one of the most beautiful islands on earth. Full of treasures like waterfalls, lagoons, caves, jungle and of course, those beaches, it’s one of the best backpacking destinations for nature lovers. As with any South East Asian backpacker spot, you can expect awesome nightlife in the form of casual bars and cocktail buckets – the Jungle Party on Friday nights isn’t to be missed! Our top insider tip is to head out to the pier on Cloud 9 beach with a few beers one evening and watch the sun set over the ocean, as the last few surfers drift in. Totally magical!

Mad Monkey hostels are the stuff of backpacking legend, and Mad Monkey Siargao is no exception. It’s got a huge social space set around the swimming pool, with a tiki bar and restaurant, beer pong and foosball tables. The town of Kodaikanal in India’s scorching Tamil Nadu region offers a refreshing break from the heat, with a misty hillside location 2,000 metres above sea level. 📸@simowilliams

Scandinavia is as cool as it gets, but if you want to score serious hipster points then don’t just visit the big hitters like Oslo and Copenhagen. Vibrant Trondheim is one of the best backpacking destinations for 2020. A creative student city, it has a massive craft beer and local food scene, which you can sample at the many cafes and restaurants in the pedestrianised city centre. It’s full of prime Insta content, like the classic Scandi-style colourful buildings along the waterfront… just save some space in your camera roll for the towering gothic cathedral! As the first capital of Norway, this city is packed full of history for you to discover. You can even tick off a bucket list experience by seeing the Northern Lights here between September to March. So, what are you waiting for?

To save some bucks in this pricey city (that’s Scandinavia for you), Trondheim Vandrerhjem is the best budget accommodation option. Hawaii meets Europe in the adorable seaside town of Hossegor in south-western France. It’s another spot on our list that’s famous for surfing (it sounds like you lot will be spending a lot of time in the water in 2020!), and the atmosphere is insane during October when it hosts professional championships like the Quiksilver and Roxy Pros. The rest of the year is much more chilled, with a massive community of nomads passing through to enjoy its peaceful beaches, pedestrian and cyclist-friendly town centre, and café culture in the many French bakeries. 3. Maribor – Slovenia 🇸🇮

✨ For wine lovers & medieval charm

While iconic Lake Bled and pretty capital Ljubljana have secured Slovenia a place on most traveller’s Interrailing itineraries, we’re exploring more of the country in 2020. Second city Maribor is the perfect place to start – a charming spot filled with medieval buildings, winding streets and cosy wine cafes. If you didn’t know, Slovenia is famous for its incredible (and ridiculously cheap) local wine, and Maribor is one of the best places to sample it. It’s surrounded by wine-growing hills and even has a wine museum that offers tastings! For such a small city Maribor packs a punch, with a strong line-up of summer festivals, a lively student vibe and a picturesque Old Town that rivals Europe’s biggest and best.

2. Surat Thani – Thailand 🇹🇭

✨ For authentic Thai vibes & hidden gems

You might be surprised that Surat Thani is one of our top backpacking destinations, because in the past it’s been known mostly as a jumping-off point for the eastern Thai islands. Well, that’s all about to change, as backpackers are wising up to the fact that Surat Thani offers an authentic Thai experience away from the tourists. Start your day exploring the crowd-free temples in the city centre, like the majestic Surat Thani Pillar Shrine, before hanging out with the locals with a few Chang beers on the laid-back Ban Don Pier. From here you can hire a longtail boat and be guided through the canals that surround the city, observing rural life and maybe even spotting a whopping monitor lizard. If nothing else, visit Surat Thani for some of the best Thai food you’ll ever find –  classics like spicy papaya salad, pad Thai and crispy pork are on offer at the buzzing night market.

Just two minutes’ walk from the market is Boundary Hostel and Cafe, a rustic, family-run spot that’s full of local charm. Expect unrivalled hospitality, free breakfast and cosy dorms. 🎉How to find the best party hostels in Amsterdam

Every backpacker who loves to party has Amsterdam right at the top of their travel to-do list. This city, known for its beautiful people, hedonistic nightlife and relaxed attitude to weed, has to be experienced to be believed, and the best party hostels in Amsterdam are set up to guarantee you have a good time from morning until night.

You know a city takes its after-dark action seriously when they appoint a nachtburgemeester, meaning Mayor of the Night (what a job title!) Since the role’s introduction, Amsterdam’s club scene has gone from strength-to-strength, and now you can party for 24-hours in former squats and war bunkers, abandoned warehouses and even a pirate ship. Amsterdam has birthed some of the biggest names in EDM, so if lasers and banging tunes are what you’re in the market for, check out what international DJs are in town at the same time as you and prepare for an all-night party! The city doesn’t just offer dance music, whether you’re into hip hop, reggae, pop or funk – there’s a dancefloor just waiting to be graced with your presence in Amsterdam.

Traditionally, the city’s nightlife action happens in the Red Light District, and around Dam Square, Leidseplein and Rembrantplein. However, partying here is kind of like partying in central London, i.e. prices are high and you’ll do well to meet a local. So, if you’re looking to experience the nightlife that locals love, you’ll want to set your sights on areas like De Pijp, Oud-West, Amsterdam Noord, Haarlemmbuurt and Westerpark.

On average a stay at one of the best party hostels in Amsterdam will set you back between €15-45 per night, but be aware of the city tax of 7% that you’re expected to pay on arrival.

💰 Budget tip: Party hostels in Amsterdam range from €15-45 per night. Keep in mind the city tax (7%) on arrival.

Easily traversable by Shinkansen, Kyushu has a wealth of natural beauty, history, food and culture that is so distinct from the main island of Honshu that it almost feels like another country. Make sure not to miss out on your next trip to Japan. If you’re visiting in July, the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival is a must see with its giant floats. Also worth checking out are Kagoshima’s Sengan-en gardens.

Unlike Tokyo, Fukuoka has a much more chilled out pace and is a great town to leisurely explore as a backpacker. Because of this legacy, Okinawa has a very different history to the rest of Japan which is immediately apparent in the local cultural motifs.
